How to Make a Port & Tonic

Here’s the thing: there’s more to Port than a rich, red, sweet dessert wine. Enter the Port and tonic.

In fact, Port wine cocktails (which have been increasing in popularity globally these past few years) have actually been around for quite some time. While you might think that Port is an after-dinner drink, many countries like France have been enjoying it for centuries as an aperitif.

Port and tonic (or Porto Tonico, as it’s more commonly called) is a classic, refreshing staple that’s as popular in Portugal as the Aperol spritz is in Italy. Looking for a traditional Port and tonic recipe? Read on…

How to make a classic Port wine and tonic cocktail:

  • 1/3 part white Port (a dry or extra dry style is preferred)

  • 2/3 part tonic water (I prefer lower sugar tonics like ones from Q Mixers)

  • A squeeze of fresh lemon juice

  • Ice

  • Optional garnishes: lime wedge, mint leaves, orange slice, a sprig of rosemary

Fill a glass with ice and pour in the Port and tonic water. Mix together with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Add your preferred garnish.

Enjoy!

Cheers,
Rebecca
