Secrets of Porto: The American Influencer’s Guide to Portugal’s Port Wine Capital

Portugal is on the map in a big way, especially when it comes to leading destinations for American travelers.

By the numbers, more Americans are visiting Portugal than ever before. And while the country’s capital city Lisbon may receive a lot of attention, it’s its second-largest city just a three-hour drive north up the coast that’s becoming a not-so-hidden-anymore gem of a destination.

Porto is being discovered.

When I first ideated the vision for Starboard, a Port wine for the American dinner party, I needed to first prove that Americans could and would drink Port.

Enter the research and development phase (which is still very much underway) as I bring the flagship product to life.

One of the biggest reasons why Port wine is gaining more momentum among American consumers is through discovery. Namely, travel.

More Americans are discovering Port wine through their travels to Porto — Port wine’s home port.

I wanted to learn more about this discovery process so I reached out to — you guessed it: some American influencers who are sharing their discoveries and adventures in Port wine with their massive, loyal followings.

Read on to explore some insights about what they had to say about the coastal city of Porto and what makes it so special (and yes, Port wine has a lot to do with it):

‘I enjoyed the city more than Lisbon’

Sara of Travel à la Mer says Porto is truly a destination worth visiting if your travels take you to Portugal. From secret sunset spots to world-famous art, here’s what she had to say about the city:

“Porto is the epitome of European charm. The city is super walkable and full of beautiful buildings everywhere you turn. Go exploring! Visit the iconic blue and white tile murals — azulejos — that Porto is famous for. And make sure to head to Kitties Rock for a secret sunset view!”

‘The Douro Valley is a must’

For wine educator and wine tasting club creator Lexi Stephens, the famously rugged and majestic winemaking region of the Douro Valley is a must-see for those exploring the region.

She recommends booking a driving tour (she found a company via Trip Advisor) that also includes a cruise on the iconic Douro River.

“For anyone visiting Porto, a day trip to the Douro Valley is a must! It's home to some of the steepest vineyards in the world, so the views are incredible and the wines are delicious. Be sure to also enjoy a river cruise in a traditional rabelo boat!”

‘Order the Porto Tonico

When in Porto, drink Port. Inspired by her recent ventures to Port wine’s home port, I reached out to Raquel Royers, the wine blogger behind Watch Me Sip to see if she might be willing to share some insights from her travels. Here’s what she recommends when visiting Porto:

“Wear very comfy shoes! The streets are mostly cobblestone and are all uphill. Order a Porto Tonico for a refreshing spritz-like drink. This is made from either white or rosé Port with tonic water. Walk the riverfront and over the Dom Luis I bridge — but after your first time crossing, or if you're tired of walking, you can take advantage of the river taxi for only a few euros and take a trip to the other side of the river — Vila Nova de Gaia — there are lots of Port houses over here. Make an appointment in advance.”

She also recommended taking a trip to the Douro Valley and noted that “The views are truly incredible.”

‘The locals may get upset that I’m letting you in on their little secret…’

Nicole Muscari, who left the fashion industry to pursue wine via her popular blog and Instagram by the name Grape Chic®️, knows her way around Porto — especially its dining scene.

Here’s her insider intel about Porto that is likely to get the stamp of approval from the locals:

“The locals may get upset that I’m letting you in on their little secret, but The Royal Cocktail Club has the best cocktails in town by a long shot. The vibe is very ‘West Village Speakeasy,’ with mixologists wearing button-down shirts and aprons. Expect to find classic and unique cocktails, all with impeccable presentations. If you love a good Negroni, don’t miss out on The Royal.

If you're looking for the best and most intimate wine tasting experience, look no further than de Lima's Wine Bar. Sommelier Rafael de Lima will take you through a flight of Portuguese wine accompanied by local meats & cheeses. As you sip, Rafa will touch on tasting techniques, Portuguese terroir, and winemaking in a fun and approachable way. Rafa is incredibly candid and personable; you’ll be sure to leave with a new love for Portuguese wine and a memorable experience.

When it comes to eating like a local, Cervejaria Gazela is not to be missed. They're famous for their cachorrinhos, or, "spicy hot dogs" tasted and loved by the great Anthony Bourdain. Order a side of fries and a Super Bock, and you have yourself a lunch!”
