Debunking the Taylor Port Wine TikTok Challenge

Maybe you’ve seen it on TikTok or read about it in an article, but Port wine is having a moment — particularly Taylor Port wine — on the viral video-sharing social platform TikTok.

What exactly is the Port wine TikTok challenge?

TikTokers are posting videos of themselves drinking Taylor Port wine. And while the style itself resembles closely to Port as it’s a sweet fortified wine, it’s not technically an authentic Port wine. Why? Because it’s not produced in Portugal.

What is Taylor Port wine?

Taylor Port wine is a fortified wine from New York’s famous Finger Lake wine region. But because only real Port Wine can only be made in Portugal, Taylor Port wine is not considered ‘authentic’ Port wine. Instead, it’s considered to be a a wine in the style of Port.

Taylor Port (as seen on TikTok) must also not be mistaken for the other Taylor Port wine — confused yet? Hang tight.

What is Taylor’s Port?

Taylor Fladgate is an authentic Port wine and is one of the oldest of the founding Port houses. Since 1692, the Taylor family has been producing quality Ports in a range of styles.

It’s wonderful to see people experiencing Port wine and sharing it with others, but I’d like to pose a new challenge: to drink authentic Port.

So here’s to the next great TikTok challenge: let’s #drinkport — the authentic kind.
